Welcome to the waking dream, investigators. Leah here again with another peek at the upcoming Dreams of Kingsport, a setting guide for the Arkham HorrorRPG. This time we’ll take a look at Chapter 2: The Dreamlands. A major contributor to this chapter was Brandon Perdue, who consolidated and synthesized a ton of information about the bizarre and strange land that lies across the veil of dreaming. Brandon also wrote five mini-mysteries for you to use as inspiration and as a starting point when crafting your own investigations (we discussed the introduction of mini-mysteries in the previous article).
Writing about the Dreamlands is the first big dive the Arkham Horror roleplaying game line takes into another world. We explore the multiple continents—the West, North, South, and East—as well as the looming darkness of the Underworld, the infinite emptiness of the Void, and the insidious presence of the Moon. Throughout the chapter you’ll be introduced to the mystical and unnervingly intelligent cats that live alongside humans in Ulthar, discover that not every crew of a flying ship is particularly friendly, and that spiders can get a lot bigger than you thought.
This chapter focuses primarily on world-building and locations rather than mechanical additions, which we’ll get into in Chapter 3: Tools of Investigation and Chapter 4: Entities and Their Domains.
And that’s another sneak-peak in the books! Oh, and a word of caution about traveling in the Dreamlands—the ship can, of course, fly, so believe it. –Leah Hawthorne
