All aboard, investigators! Leah here again with another peek at the upcoming setting guide supplement for the Arkham Horror roleplaying game—Dreams of Kingsport. In this post we take a quick look at Chapter 1: Kingsport, Massachusetts. I’d like to throw a shout-out to one of the main contributors to the chapter, Keith Ryan Kappel, who worked tirelessly to refresh the presentation of lore that some fans may already be familiar with as well as add new content to sink your investigative minds into (like the ship-wrecked island of Marbletooth).
A big highlight of this section of the book is that we introduce something new for the Arkham Horror RPG line—mini mysteries, which are 2-page outlines of investigations that include the key points and one unique NPC for GMs to use to run with the adventure. We include one of these mini mysteries for each of the main districts of Kingsport (and maybe some other places…) like Central Hill and Southside.
These brief quick-shot splats are intended to give GMs more fodder for telling stories with their players, especially when it’s the night before game day and you haven’t had the time to prep anything! Trust us, we’ve been there. Instead of panic, you can just pick out one of these outlines and breathe a little easier knowing you have something to work with instead of needing to make something from scratch at the last minute.
So, to sum this up—Chapter 1 is all about the mist-shrouded, iconic town of Kingsport, its locations, inhabitants, and some of the peculiar investigative opportunities that you and your fellow sleuths might encounter there. We provide additional support for the world-building and GMs in Chapter 4, where you can find NPC profiles that fit the vibe of the section, like a general Mariner write-up or more specific characters like the cookie-baking Gladys Pickman.
Keep an eye out for the next article about Dreams of Kingsport where I talk a bit about the bizarre realm of the Dreamlands and go over some of the highlights of Chapter 2.
Thanks for reading! Ah, and of course, do remember that violence is not permitted on Sanctuary grounds… –Leah Hawthorne
