Explore The Big Easy with Songs of New Orleans

Explore The Big Easy with Songs of New Orleans

Edge Studio’s latest release for Arkham Horror: The Roleplaying Game takes you down to the bayou to stalk through dark alleys and along the Mississippi in search of ghosts, monsters, and mysteries. No matter whether you’ve been around the Big Easy for a long while or you know nothing about the city, Songs of New Orleans provides game masters and players with everything they need to run or play in a game of Arkham Horror: The Roleplaying Game in the Paris of the South.

Exploring New Orleans

The first chapter of Songs of New Orleans is a comprehensive setting guide to the city. It features an overview of the Crescent City’s rich history, a survey of its layout as it was in the 1920s, a walkthrough of the various districts following the city’s growth and expansion, and detailed descriptions of interesting locations like landmarks and famous restaurants. It also offers short profiles on important characters with a few prewritten short mysteries thrown into the boil. For players, the overview of the city will help you roleplay as a true local.

For game masters, Songs of New Orleans gives you what you need to structure your game but leaves plenty of space for you to build your own mysteries. Every page is filled to the brim with relevant information on both the sunny side and the dark underbelly of the city, from the bustle of crowds that fill the French Market to the sketchy speakeasy in the Cabaret Metairie. Every section contains a sidebar of notable locals, complete with all the necessary character information for you to introduce them into your game and enough backstory and personal goals to give them a sense of belonging. Some of these non-player characters will be familiar to fans of Arkham Horror and the Cthulhu Mythos, such as Inspector John Raymond Legrasse.

Investigating the Crescent City

Across 44 pages of rich setting information are six detailed mysteries. Each of these mysteries includes an introductory hook for players, a short description of the truth for the GM to review, and a scene-by-scene overview with key investigation points called out in each scene. These adventures are scattered throughout the chapter to utilize the locations and characters outlined in the prior section.

These mysteries perfectly capture the themes of Arkham Horror as they manifest on the sinister streets and the mist-shrouded riverfront of New Orleans. Whether you want to jump into the setting and riff like a Creole jazz band or plan out your adventure just as Adrien de Pauger first laid down the city’s streets, these short adventures will be invaluable. They can be used as introductions to a campaign, played as standalone mysteries in a one-shot game, or inserted in the middle of a long-running game as another sinister plot for the player characters to solve.

A Change of Scenery

The Arkham Horror RPG is synonymous with the legend-haunted city of Arkham, Massachusetts, but those dreary New England alleys and crumbling Colonials are only one flavor of horror. For more vibrant frights, New Orleans is a place where magic, music, money, mystery, misery, and monsters all come together to form a setting that serves as the perfect Roaring Twenties backdrop for investigators to chase and fight eldritch beings.

The history, structure, and culture of New Orleans is unique in the United States. There is no other place with the same mixture of French, American, African, Southern, and Caribbean culture. That special blend is visible in the history of the city, the architecture, the names of its streets and districts, and the people that live there. Jazz music emanates from the city’s many dance clubs, carrying a powerful energy; spirits lie dormant beyond the veil of this world until a voodoo practitioner calls them in a ritual of power; monsters emerge from the shores of Lake Pontchartrain to attack the living, leaving the remains to be devoured by alligators; criminals murder their rivals and dump the bodies over the sides of a ferry boat into the Mississippi River. All of this and more are found in the Big Easy, and Songs of New Orleans is your guide to all of it.
