The second book in The Drowned City series from Aconyte Books, The Nightmare Quest of April May, has been out for about a month now, so we thought it was a good time to check out what people are saying.
The Nightmare Quest of April May takes place just before the events of The Drowned City Campaign Expansion. It’s the second book in the series, following The Forbidden Visions of Lucius Galloway, which introduces the eponymous Investigator, who made his game debut in The Drowned City Investigators Expansion. Both books act as prequels to the events of The Drowned City, forming a loose series. There’s no need to have read The Forbidden Visions of Lucius Galloway to follow events in The Nightmare Quest of April May, though, so you can jump in with either book.
So, if you haven’t checked out The Nightmare Quest of April May yet, here’s what readers are saying:
“The Nightmare Quest of April May works fully on its own merits, presenting readers with engaging character work and a worthwhile mystery, but as a tie-in novel I believe it excels in that it elevates the experience for fans engaging in the game’s narrative at this turning point in Arkham’s history.” – Damian Wayne (The Arkham Historian)
“This book is an absolute treat for fans of the series. I love the stories where an unsuspecting member of the public living their usual humdrum life suddenly finds themself fighting against the Mythos. I don’t want to give a spoiler but there is a wonderful way where a magic wand is disguised as an everyday item. I will be forever studying those items in future just to make sure they are not a disguised wand.” – Podsy McPod (Amazon)
“Such a fun read that included tales of Lovecraft you know, Cthulhu. Innsmouth, as well as Chambers’ The King in Yellow. I loved reading the story through April May’s POV especially, it was so interesting seeing the world of Lovecraftian horrors through her eyes. It was so refreshing to be in the world of Arkham and Innsmouth but written modern day.” – Charles Wilkinson (Goodreads)
“There’s something about the shy, quiet hero that doesn’t think they can help anyone until they find the right push and take the leap. Then they find that they can do it, and in fact they can do even more. Natural heroes are comforting, but reluctant heroes remind us that we all have the potential inside of us, and that’s aspiring!” – Luna Gauthier (Cosmic Circus)
“The Nightmare Quest of April May comes to a satisfying conclusion while still leaving some threads untucked, hinting at more dark activities to come.” – Kara Dennison (Kara Dennison Blog)
