This summer, consult a catalog of the creepiest monsters your investigators will ever have the misfortune of encountering. Edge Studio releases The Thompson Files on June 26, and within its 96 pages you’ll find the most terrifying and complete bestiary ever produced for Arkham Horror: The Roleplaying Game!
Top researcher Mandy Thompson has embarked on an ambitious project; to study and catalog some of the strange and supernatural monstrosities, horrors, and eldritch abominations that plague our reality and threaten to consume us all. Such a project is not for the faint of heart, but luckily, Mandy has made many friends in her investigations over the years. Now she has reached out to them, and made some of their observations available in a combined volume for any would-be investigator.
Nine Chilling Chapters
Each of the nine chapters in this book is written by a different famous investigator. From veteran spy Trish Scarborough to master magician Dexter Drake, and from celebrated shaman Akachi Onyele to renowned mariner Silas Marsh, Mandy has made sure to consult the experts in their fields. Not only has she gathered a roster of the monsters, ghosts, and horrifying creatures these investigators have encountered in their adventures around the world, Mandy has also included some of their stories, adventures, and observations as well. This means The Thompson Files actually has ten authors, with Mandy serving as the editor as well as head researcher.
The book includes the following chapters:
- Chapter 1: Minions of Flame by Trish Scarborough
- Chapter 2: Dangers of the Deep by Silas Marsh
- Chapter 3: Mysteries of East Asia by Kōhaku Narukami
- Chapter 4: Creatures Beyond this World by Norman Withers
- Chapter 5: Strangeness on the Road by “Ashcan” Pete
- Chapter 6: Tales of the Dibia by Akachi Onyele
- Chapter 7: Masters of Magic by Dexter Drake
- Chapter 8: Denizens of Realms Undreamt Of by Luke Robinson
- Chapter 9: Scales of the Desert by Father Mateo
But Mandy doesn’t just take their work at face value. Alongside each investigator’s writings, she has included her own notes. After all, a lifetime encountering these things may leave some with a…shaky grasp of reality. Mandy is here to ground everything in firm scientific principles. Even the things that do their best to defy those principles entirely.
Multitudes of Monsters
The Thompson Files includes 51 profiles of monsters, each a different challenge for a group of investigators. They have their own strengths and weaknesses, as well as motives and behaviors. Some, such as the famous Sasquatch, are classic legends given form. Others, such as the Mi-Go Soldier and Mi-Go Scientist, are equally classic adversaries from the Cthulhu Mythos, ready to abduct an unfortunate investigator and transplant their brain into a jar for study.
Some of the creatures may actually be allies, if approached correctly. The elusive Gnorri are strange, four-armed merfolk who are said to live in the Dreamlands, but who also may slip into our own world from time to time. If treated well, they may be able to lead lost souls through any labyrinth, or protect them with the power of their mysterious twisted rods of silver and crystal.
And others are hapless pawns being exploited by powers beyond their understanding. The Cultist of Ash is simply a regular person who has had the misfortune of being branded with the mark of the Brethren of Ash cult (first made famous in the Arkham Horror: The Card Game Chapter Two core set). It is up to your investigators whether they ruthlessly exterminate these agents of chaos, or try and liberate them from their enthrallment.
Thrilling Adventures
Finally, this book doesn’t just provide the profiles of adversaries. It also includes adventure synopses that help you create circumstances to encounter them! Each chapter has a single-page mystery featuring one or more of the monsters found in that section. With only a little work from a game master, these abbreviated adventures can be expanded to fill a whole session, or even strung together into a campaign.
